Preparing Your Cat for Her New Kittens

Discovering that your beloved cat is pregnant is one of the most exciting moments of being a cat owner. You should know what to do to make your cat as comfortable as possible during the whole period of her pregnancy and delivery. You must also make sure that you will also prepare your home for the arrival of the new kittens.

First thing you should do is to give your cat a space that is completely her own. You can choose any corner or area in the house that you think will make a good place to put your cat and her kittens. If you have other pets, make sure that you will train them not to go to that specific place for your cat. The space or area doesn’t have to be very big and spacious as long as it is secluded and quiet. Your cat might want to spend some quiet moments with her kittens so choose the place carefully.

If your cat already has a basket that you think is spacious enough even for the kittens, then you could put it in your chosen area so your cat will be trained to go there and will be more comfortable staying in that area. If you don’t have the budget to buy a bigger basket for your cat and her kittens, you could just use a blanket or towel as long as it is soft and comfortable. Comfort is a very important factor in this stage of your cat’s life because she is about to face some pain so it would be better if you could reduce her pain by making her area as comfortable as possible.

Take your pregnant cat to a veterinarian for a check up to make sure that she is in good health. The doctor could even give you some advice about how to help your cat through the whole period of pregnancy and you could get some information about what to do when it is time for your cat to give birth to her kittens. Ask the veterinarian about how to care for the new kittens as well if this will be your first time having new born kittens.

Another good way to prepare your cat for motherhood is to give her a diet consisting of foods that are suitable for pregnant cats. You could ask your vet about the best foods to include in your pregnant cat’s diet. This way, you can be sure that your cat and the kittens will get all the essential nutrients that they really need to be strong and healthy. This is important to ensure the safe delivery of the kittens and the safety of your cat as well.

Having a pregnant cat is a very exciting experience but it will also require some work and preparation especially for first timers. Observing your cat’s behavior will give you some ideas about how to make her more comfortable and about the things that could help ease and reduce the pain. This is also a great time to show your cat how much you care for her.
